Black Rock Irish Stout

Black Rock Irish Stout

Black Rock Irish Stout, brewed in County Waterford

This weekend, a friend brought a couple bottles of Black Rock  Irish Stout over for us to try.  Generally, I prefer lighter beers so I was a bit wary at first. However I had nothing to worry about as this stout is quite light and airy compared to the likes of Guinness, Beamish or Murphys.

Dungarven Brewery is an Irish Microbrewery based in Waterford with three main brews; Black Rock Irish StoutCopper Coast Red Ale and Helvick Gold Blonde Ale. The Black Rock Stout was dark and had a slight flavour of coffee and vanilla to it.  It was exceptionally smooth, pleasant and easy to drink.  I would definitely buy it again, and I hope it comes on tap regularly somewhere in Cork.

The first stout from Dungarvan Brewery that I tried was their Coffee and Oatmeal stout at the Easter Festival at the Franciscan Well (www.franciscanwellbrewery.com) in Cork.  This is also a beer that I would  recommend due to its unique flavour and texture.  The Franciscan Well had brewers from all over Ireland and while I couldn’t sample them all (38 different beers apparently), there was one lad who did manage a glass of everything over the two day festival!

Pros:

  • Smooth, and lighter than you would expect for a stout
  • Rich flavour
  • Easy drinking
  • All brewing is done on site in Waterford

Cons:

  • Harder to find than Murphy’s or Guinness, but worth the extra effort.

Conclusion:

Whether you are a stout drinker or not,  if you see this beer on tap or on the shelf it is definitely worth trying!
